@artgalleryofnsw new north wing is remarkable and the tank in particular is extraordinary as a space.. however I was there for paintings and to see the recently acquired Ribera painting of Aesop again. Such a wonderful painting leaning in and out of darkness..greys and browns of tattered clothing painted so beautifully with such gravity and presence that the eye wants to stay looking and moving, such a strong thing this painting. The Guston painting also works this way with emerging and submerging forms and the same strange pleasure of enjoying looking at ruins and decay..Pierre and Chaim, Max and Markus continued this reverie of hubris for me #josederibera #aesop #pierrebonnard #philipguston #chaimsoutine #markuslüpertz #maxbeckmann #paintings #thetank

ok, so some insight into my method. I have a slightly obsessive fascination with art materials and my own and other people’s discarded works of art. The materials, paint, paper, pencils as far as I’m concerned have fully realised artworks in them waiting to be magically released and the discarded works likewise speak to me to be rescued, I don’t like waste, however it’s way more than some principle of recycling materials. I believe strongly that creative potential [dormant potency] lies waiting in all matter and it’s my role as an artist to listen to and for these suppressed or abandoned aspects of consciousness. So this was a watercolour disposed of by a friend but the paper was good..and there was something in the picture I wanted to bring out. Made me think of being driven through Romania by friends in bright snowy morning light and seeing people working in the fields while our friend vented the overheated radiator

Somewhere in the vicinity of 270 works this year.. I wanted to post the most recent work as it’s a mystery to me and that’s really what you look for making art. To take an image, an idea from inception to some kind of revelation. If you can pinpoint the revelation to the final touches that’s a special event and this one has worked that way.
At least that’s how I felt as I left the studio. Art like life is uncontainable though. So maybe I’ll remain content but often when you re-see a work the veil drops and it’s back to square one.
